Domtar to Indefinitely Idle Espanola Mill

Domtar Corporation, part of the Paper Excellence Group, has announced that it will indefinitely shut down its pulp and paper operations at its Espanola, Ontario facility for over a year.

This will result in a reduction in Domtar’s annual pulp production by around 280,000 air-dried metric tons of northern bleached softwood kraft pulp and 69,000 tons of specialty paper.

The decision will affect around 450 employees and will be implemented in accordance with the company’s collective agreement, policy, and legislation. The mill will be shut down in early October and the paper machines by early November.

However, workers are not convinced. After years of working from home, employees are pushing back because they say that the option to work remotely affords them a better quality of life.
