The CFO of Boca Raton-based Office Depot will move to another public company further south as he assumes the same C-suite title at Fort Lauderdale-based AutoNation.

Joseph Lower will leave Office Depot Jan. 10 after just over two years with the office supplies retailer. On Jan. 13, he starts as AutoNation’s executive VP and CFO, a position that was vacated when the largest automotive retailer promoted Cheryl Miller to CEO this summer.

Office Depot has initiated a search for its next CFO.

“Joe [Lower] is a seasoned financial professional, with a versatile background across multiple industries,” Miller said in a statement. “With his broad and extensive experience in financial management, business development and strategy, [he] will be a great addition to the executive team.”

As CFO of AutoNation, Lower joins the company’s executive committee and reports directly to Miller. He will oversee AutoNation’s financial department and will be responsible for all financial reporting, analysis and accounting.
